Transportation is a vital part of the Head Start Program in our area. We service 8 different centers all over Fayette County. We utilize regular school buses that undergo the same state inspections as all the others on the road. The Head Start buses are equipped with 5-point harness seating for our children and each run has a bus monitor that rides along to ensure the safety of children and staff.
The Transportation Coordinator is responsible for creating bus runs, working with our drivers and contracted bus lines, organizing maintenance and upkeep of the equipment, as well as making sure that bus evacuations are completed throughout the year. Our program requires that the children undergo bus evacuations at the beginning of the year, during the month of March, and again in May. The classroom staff and Head Start drivers prepare the children by explaining the importance of school bus safety and why we need to do the evacuations. During the evacuation, the children are loaded onto the bus and buckled in. Once everyone is ready, they are unbuckled and dismissed in an orderly manner.
Thanks to the hard work and prior preparation by our staff, the classroom children are doing a terrific job getting on and off the bus, quickly, quietly, and safely.
