The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc.’s Head Start/Early Head of Fayette County is doing big things! The Mt. Vernon and Lemont Furnace Head Start classrooms recently completed a study entitled “Community Helpers.” During this study, the children were introduced to different types of community helpers, discussed the roles they play in the community as well as their importance. The children also explored community helpers with the use of books, songs, dramatic play and field trips. Recently, the children from two Head Start classrooms were invited to attend an event at Mt. Macrina Manor, a nursing home located in Uniontown, PA. The event was a great way for children to see local Community Helpers in action.

The event was planned in honor of National Skilled Nursing Care Week and was held on Monday, May 13, 2019.  Children from the Mt Vernon (Room 1) and Lemont Furnace (Room 3) were in attendance for the event. This was a Disney themed event which included a story time, musical entertainment, snacks and socializing with the nursing home residents and special Disney guests. A team of skilled nurses assisted with the event and were present to help with the residents.

The event began with story readings by Minnie Mouse. The residents and children enjoyed listening to the classic Disney story of Cinderella followed by the story of Frozen. The children and residents were greeted by the special guests of Cinderella, Princess Elsa, Belle, and Olaf where Elsa sang four Disney favorites for the audience. Following the stories and songs, children enjoyed taking pictures and talking with the princesses and the nursing home residents. The children received Disney post cards and stickers. The event ended with the children and residents enjoying Mickey Mouse cookies and drinks. Mt. Macrina Manor hosted a wonderful event and a great time was had by all!
