March has been a fun month for children enrolled in the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc.’s Pre-K programs in Allegheny and Beaver Counties.
To celebrate SEL Day on Friday, March 10th, the children in Pre-K at Southside Elementary listened to The Color Monster book. The class discussed feelings and emotions. The children were able to identify most of the Color Monster’s emotions. They painted their own Color Monsters and played with Color Monster paper tubes in the block center. They sorted colors into feelings jars in the sensory table. For a special snack, the class decorated cookies with colored sprinkles. The children enjoyed sharing how they were feeling and learning that all emotions are “OK”.
This Pre-K student at Burchfield Primary School has been learning all about Mat Man and the letters of the alphabet, thanks to the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum.
As part of their “Clothing Study”, students at Pre-K Marzolf were able to create their own tie-dye shirts!

Pre-K Students at Scott Primary School participated in a Study about Space- utilizing some materials and activity ideas from one of the 9 Pre-K STEM Bins. Children were able to play with space shuttle toys, investigate and sort (homemade) moon rocks, and look through a telescope to find the star shaped letters of their names. With sand in the Sensory Table, toy astronauts made many space walks! A teacher created “Home Mission Control” area was set up so that the students could “talk” to astronauts. After making their very own straw rockets, the gymnasium served as a perfect launch pad. As a special treat, Pre-K children were even able to sample Astronaut Ice Cream.
Pre-K Students at Todd Lane Elementary School participated in a study about Spring. They “caught” rainbows and practiced writing the letters of their name on each color.
