PA CareerLink® offices located in Westmoreland and Fayette counties celebrated PA CareerLink® Awareness Day the first two weeks of September, with a series of job fair and resource events.

PA CareerLink® Westmoreland County at Youngwood took the opportunity to highlight employer services and job seeker opportunities through a job fair featuring local employers and partners on September 4th, from 10:00am to 1:00pm. They hosted a total of 33 employers and 7 partners, and serviced approximately 83 job seekers. Throughout the day employers reported to staff that they established several connections with job seekers and each other, with some staying beyond the designated time to continue networking. Additionally, the office received interest through social media from employers who would like to be included in future job fair events.

In a similar fashion, PA CareerLink® Alle-Kiski hosted a job fair and resource event on September 5th from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Their emphasis was on healthcare and apprenticeships, in addition to general PA CareerLink® awareness. They implemented several unique methods of engaging job seekers at the event, such as PA CareerLink® bingo, which led them through the job fair via color-coded balloons at employer and partner tables. The event drew in a large number of participants, with approximately 65 job seekers arriving to speak with the 16 employers and 10 partners present.

PA CareerLink® Fayette County was the last of the offices to host their event, with a resource and job fair taking place on September 12th. They opted for a different time, choosing instead to remain open to the public from 2:00pm to 6:00pm, in hopes of capturing the interest of individuals who may be looking to change careers and are limited by their current working hours. They also elected to focus more on the services provided by PA CareerLink® partners, and chose to promote the event as a “Community Cares Day.” The office received word that job seekers enjoyed the later time, as it aligned well with their current work schedules, and many staff members remarked that they witnessed a different selection of job seekers than is normal for these events. In total, 32 partners and employers attended (with many operating as both), and attracted approximately 56 job seekers.

Overall, staff reported that they felt these events were successful in creating outreach with the community, and allowed them to reach a new demographic of job seekers. They look forward to implementing these new findings, such as later event times and different methods of engaging attendees, for future events.
