February was National Children’s Dental Health Month and a great time to promote good oral health practices at Head Start.
Head Start/Early Head Start educates families and children on developing good oral health habits at an early age and encourages them to visit the dentist regularly to give children a great start for a lifetime of healthy teeth. Parents are advised it is best to begin taking their children to the dentist twice a year once they begin getting teeth or by age 1.
During this program year, we have provided families with dental hygiene education materials along with a bag for children that included a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and a timer, to help them understand the importance of tooth brushing. Recently, and since COVID, classroom children have resumed brushing their teeth daily when in school, and for home based students, during their weekly visit.
Fayette County Head Start/Early Head Start has collaborated with two agencies, UPMC Dental Care and Cornerstone Care Dental. They provide Oral Health Education and tooth brushing items during their visits. UPMC visited the children in December and Cornerstone plans to see the children in March and April. Our partnership with Cornerstone Care has given us the opportunity of having Mobile Dental Clinics for children to have an examination by a dentist. This may be the first exam for some children and helps determine if additional treatment is required.
Fayette County’s next scheduled Dental Clinic is in March. The Head Start/Early Head Start staff encourages families to sign up and take advantage of it.
Oral Health is the window for overall good health. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day as recommended and seeing your dentist regularly can lead to a Happier, Healthier You 😊
