As we enter the holiday season, we also enter the cold and flu season.  Let’s face it, no one enjoys being sick so here are some common reminders about when you or your children should stay home from work or school.

  • Fever- a fever over 100.4
  • Vomiting – more than 2 times in a 24-hour period
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe Couch or trouble breathing
  • Contagious illnesses: Flu, COVID-19, RSV, Strep, etc.

These are the most common reasons to stay home if you or your child is not feeling well.   Most childcare centers and schools have policies for how long children must remain home with each of the above listed illnesses.

To decrease the spread of illness there are some common practices you can do.  Listed below are some common practices you and your child can do:

  • Wash your hands often.  This includes after using the restroom and using a tissue for any reason.
  • Cover your mouth when coughing
  • Avoid sharing personal items
  • Get plenty of sleep. It is recommended for adults to get 7-9 hours and children 9-13 hours per night
  • Stay up to date on vaccinations
  • Keep well hydrated
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Get regular exercise

If we all do our part, we can keep our workplace and homes healthy throughout the holiday season and beyond.
