Building Skills. Strengthening Connections. Shaping Futures at PIC
By: PIC Welcome Committee – Amy Lanz, Marette Simpson, Hannah Smail
November is National Career Development Month, a time to reflect on how we continue to grow in our professions and support others in doing the same. At the Private Industry Council, our daily experiences in Workforce, Education and Early Childhood Education illustrate how investing in career development creates lasting change for individuals, families, and our community.
💡 Growing Career and Soft Skills
Career growth is a journey that doesn’t stop once we’re employed, it evolves as we do. Technical skills, like understanding workforce data, managing programs, or using new digital tools, help us perform effectively in our roles. But soft skills such as communication, teamwork, adaptability, and leadership, are what keep our teams strong and our services impactful.
These interpersonal skills play a key role in our work with job seekers, employers, and partners. Developing strong communication and problem-solving abilities allows us to better understand community needs, deliver quality services, and create a welcoming environment for everyone who walks through our doors.
🤝 The Importance of Networking and Collaboration
Career development also means building meaningful connections. Networking within our current career field both inside and outside our organization helps us learn from others, share resources, and discover new opportunities.
At PIC and CareerLink, we are uniquely positioned to connect across programs and initiatives. By sharing information about our current projects, workshops, and employer services, we strengthen our community impact. Often, new partnerships and opportunities arise from simple conversation.
Each time we highlight what we do, we not only support our professional growth but also help others see the full range of services and supports our organization provides.
🚀 Keep Learning. Keep Connecting.
As we celebrate National Career Development Month, take time to think about your own growth:
- What new skill or area of knowledge would help you in your current role?
- How can you strengthen your professional network within PIC or PA CareerLink®?
- What program success or resource could you share with others to spark collaboration?
Together, we make a difference by continuing to learn, grow, and connect. Our commitment to personal and professional development ensures that we, and the communities we serve, continue to move forward with purpose and opportunity.
