As the new school year approaches, there are some simple steps parents can take to help prepare their child—and themselves—for a smooth start. Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Participate in Home Visits or Open Houses:
If your program offers a home visit or open house, make every effort to participate. These events give your child the chance to meet their teacher and see the classroom, making the first day a little less overwhelming.
  • Start a Routine Early:
Begin establishing a consistent bedtime and wake-up time a few weeks before school starts. This helps your child adjust gradually to the new schedule.
  • Incorporate School-Themed Bedtime Stories:
Reading about school can ease your child’s anxieties and build excitement. Many great books are available at your local library. Recommended titles include:

    • David Goes to School by David Shannon
    • The Night Before Preschool by Natasha Wing
    • Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney
    • It’s Time for Preschool! by Esmé Raji Codell
    • When I Miss You by Cornelia Maude Spelman
    • My First Day at Nursery School by Becky Edwards
    • Preschool Day Hooray! by Linda Leopold Strauss
    • The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
  • Pack Extra Clothes:
Accidents are common, especially early in the school year. Please send an extra set of weather-appropriate clothes to keep in your child’s cubby, and remember to update them as the seasons change.
  • Choose the Right Backpack:
Let your child help pick out a backpack. Just make sure it’s appropriately sized—no larger than a standard sheet of paper—so it’s easy for them to carry and store.
  • Prepare for Bus Routines:
If your child is riding the bus, arrive at the stop at least 10 minutes early and wait 10 minutes after your scheduled time. Early in the year, routes may run slower as drivers help new riders settle in safely.
  • Support the Separation Process:
It’s normal for both children and parents to need time to adjust to being apart. Be patient and consistent with drop-offs, attendance, and routines. Over time, it will get easier.

With a little preparation and encouragement, you’ll help set the stage for a happy and successful Head Start year!
