The Private Industry Council organized a STEAM Camp this summer as an extension of the Out-of-School Time After-School Program for Grades 3-5 in Monessen, PA. The Camp went from mid-June through mid-July and students practiced skills related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math with hands-on activities and projects. During the first two weeks, we went on two field trips into the Pittsburgh community.

In the first week of camp, we learned about animals, as well as their habitats and needs, to prepare the kids for a trip to the zoo! The summative STEAM project for the week was to plan and hand-build one part of a zoo habitat for their favorite animal out of clay. We ended the first week at the Pittsburgh Zoo with a real-world connection to their learning week.

Throughout week two, students explored living and nonliving, food chains, and where we get our energy from. With hands-on learning activities, we prepared for their guided tour at the Natural History Museum in Pittsburgh to end the week. They were able to build on their previous learning in Animal Science from our Zoo week and dive deeper into more complex subjects with our tour guide at the museum. The kids had a wonderful time and a great opportunity to engage with the subjects they explored in class!
