Head Start/Early Head Start of Beaver County, a program of the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. is collaborating with Dr Donald Sheffield, President of TAME, Inc. to align the Incredible Years parenting curriculum used by Head Start to promote positive parenting strategies to complement TAME Inc.’s workshops on escaping poverty leading to a road to success for children.

Dr Sheffield’s workshop will emphasize three main points for parents: Education and learning are essential to developing the skills to be successful in life; Excellence and work ethic are key factors in escaping poverty and; Developing good values will link education and excellence together. The goal is to help parents recognize the proper practices and behaviors that fosters a “culture of excellence” in the home that facilitate: proper child development; mentor and support parents on addressing the challenges of living in poverty; improve the ability of families to manage the cognitive/academic growth of children; and assist families find support systems and resources to improve their quality of life.

The Incredible Years Attentive Parenting series used by the Head Start program promotes the empowerment of parents to use positive discipline and promote social and emotional development in their child. Workshop topics include: attentive child-directed play promotes positive relationships and children’s confidence; attentive academic and persistence coaching promote children’s language and school readiness; attentive emotion coaching strengthens children’s emotional literacy and empathy; attentive social coaching promotes children’s cooperative friendships; attentive imaginative parenting promotes children’s emotional regulation skills; and attentive creative play promotes children’s problem solving and empathy.

The workshops will be held every Wednesday from 10:00am – 12:00pm beginning February 26 through April 22, 2020 at Harmony Dwellings, Beaver Falls.  All materials will be provided as well as child care and a light lunch.
