All states except South Dakota and Florida have car seat regulations for children birth to age eight. Just recently Pennsylvania becomes one of four states implementing a new car seat law stating that all children the age of 2 and under remain in a rear-facing car seat. Pennsylvania is one of eight states where children must be in a booster seat to age eight regardless of height and weight. Children over age eight must use the car seat belts and all children under the age of 13 must ride in the back seat.
Before buying a new car seat, check the manufacturer label on your car seat to see if it meets your child’s height and weight specifications for the rear facing position. More expensive is not always better. Check your vehicle manual to see if you need to buy a specific seat that will fit your car’s seats. Never buy a car seat at yard sales or flea markets. You cannot tell if the car seat has been in a crash previously, over six years old, or has been recalled for defective parts. If you have a reliable friend that wants to give you a car seat, make sure the seat is no older than 6 years past the manufacturer date, all labels are intact and the car seat installation manual is with the seat.
Car seat checks are conducted through-out the county by the Pennsylvania state police. Listen to your local radio stations, watch for flyers in local merchants or look for the signs put up the day of the check by the police. The next car seat safety check will be held on November 21, 2016 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Mike Wood Toyota in Uniontown behind the Wal-Mart store.
